A new pop-up that asks individuals to share a link to tweets rather than a screenshot is beginning to appear for some Twitter users. The popup reads, “Share Tweet instead?” and pops up right after a user screenshots a post. A report states that numerous other users, however, are observing various variations, including “Copy link” and “Share Tweet” buttons, that are visible to users. The “Copy link” pop-up, which retrieves a link to the screenshotted tweet, was experienced by certain employees of The Verge. Twitter’s Shaokyi Amdo, a spokesman, acknowledged that the prompt is being tested with a small number of iOS users. Note that, screenshots of tweets are eventually reposted on the network, but they are also shared on websites other than Twitter, such as group chats and other messaging platforms like Instagram, and TikTok videos. Additionally, there are more steps involved in visiting Twitter after reading a screenshotted message elsewhere than simply clicking a straight link. Therefore the engagement that Twitter is losing out on is images of tweets performing well elsewhere. Users can already share tweets straight to their Instagram stories, but viewers of the stories are unable to tap on the shared tweet to see it on the Twitter app. It is also speculated that a prompt informing users that they can share tweets with others, even those without accounts, was being tested by Twitter.
